The Nest

It took us about three hours to arrive at our hotel “the Nest”. Our drive was very scenic as we passed farms and towns. When we arrived at the Nest and presented our reservations to the Front Desk they told us that they didn’t have us in the system and that they were sold out as it was summer holiday time in South Africa. We booked through booking.com. They told us to sit and have a drink while they figured it out. After an hour they came back and told us they have a room for us as long as we don’t mind switching rooms half way through our stay. We agreed as we knew most places were full. I had tried to book a much nicer hotel for our stay called the Champagne Castle hotel that was at the base of where we wanted to hike but they weren’t open during our stay.

Car Camping in Bruce Peninsula National Park

The Grotto in Bruce Peninsula National Park

The Grotto in Bruce Peninsula National Park

About 3.5 hours northwest of Toronto is Bruce Peninsula National Park. We had the opportunity to do some car camping there last summer. Charlene and I have never been car camping before so it was a unique experience from the get go. We also had the opportunity to share in this adventure with her sister’s family. Once again, another first for us. We have never traveled with anyone else in this capacity. Continue reading

A Sunset Visit to Neist Point – Isle of Skye

Neist Point

Neist Point

On this day the sun was shining bright and I knew this would be an amazing evening to visit Neist Point. I’ve seen pictures online and knew this was somewhere I wanted to stop given the opportunity. The roads are so skinny in Scotland, so much so that we had to pull over every time a car was coming in the opposite direction. We did lots of hiking and this was just a short walk to get to the lighthouse, about 45 minutes round trip. Neist point is located on the North Western portion of the Isle of Skye and takes about 45 minutes to get to from Portree which is one of the main towns on the island.

The back side of Ben Nevis is pictured above.  At the bottom of this post we have included some tips for those of you planning to climb this mountain.

A Scenic Cove in Cornwall England – Kynance Cove

Kynance Cove in the Lizard Peninsula

Kynance Cove in the Lizard Peninsula

Before our trip to England, a bunch of friends told me to enjoy the rain because there wouldn’t be much sunshine. I said to myself you know rain is actually better than snow. You see, this year in Canada winter decided to stick around until the latter part of April. With months of cold temperatures and snowy days, I was beginning to think of England as a tropical destination and while it might not have tropical temperatures it might be nicer than Canada was at the time. I was correct and extremely happy about it. From the time we touched down we were in short sleeves and enjoying the sunshine in the region of Cornwall.

Scenic Hiking through the Isle of Skye – The Quiraing

The Quiraing

The Quiraing

I can now say that The Isle of Skye is one of the most scenic regions of the world that I’ve been to. If you love the outdoors… the Isle of Skye is a must. Mountains, greenery and rock formations galore make this region unlike any other. The one tip I’d give anyone visiting is make sure you allocate a good amount of time because there are so many hiking trails and things to do on this Island. The weather doesn’t always cooperate, so you end up doing things when you can and not when you plan to. Lesson Learned.

Hiking the Wild Pacific Trail on Vancouver Island

Not far from where we were staying in Ucluelet, British Columbia is a lovely trail called the Wild Pacific Trail. Not to be confused with the longer and more popular West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island.

The Sunshine of the Costa Brava Region

Costa Brava Region

Costa Brava Region

Before we planned this trip I had never heard of this Northeastern region in Spain. It wasn’t until I read a couple blog posts I was convinced this was a place we needed to see. A couple hours north of Barcelona is Costa Brava. Bringing it up in conversation I was surprised how few people usually go to this region. This is easily one of the most picturesque places I have visited. Continue reading

5 Reasons Why We Love Hiking

1. Nature
When you make an effort to get out on a trail you are rewarded by being surrounded by some amazing nature. Forests, mountain tops, Sea lines, Canyons are just a few of the areas that we have hiked through. Each area has its own unique flavour and no two areas in the world are ever replicated. That is mother natures gift to us. All we have to do is get out and enjoy it and make sure that humans don’t destroy it.
