Every trip that I go on I always try to make sure that we get to do something adventurous and something that we haven’t really done or seen before. When we visited the Lake District in England I researched horseback riding… because what could be more English than riding in the countryside. If you are visiting the UK you should definitely look into horseback riding as one of your activities.

A Canada Day Tradition: Backcountry Camping in Algonquin Park
Every Canada day weekend in July Charlene and I drive up north to spend some time camping in the woods. We have done it for 5 years now and it has become a tradition. Algonquin Park is without a doubt one of our favourite parks because of the wildlife and the quiet time we get while camping deep in the woods. Continue reading
5 things I wish I knew before I went Camping for the first time.
The warm weather is finally arriving and that means only one thing….camping season can’t be far away. I’ve been camping a number of times now but there are a few things that I wish I knew before I went the first time. These may seem really basic to those that are regular campers but we all start somewhere.
1. Less Food is more. My first time in the woods I was really concerned that I was going to run out of food for the 4 days of our trip. So what did I do? I loaded up on junk food and I specifically remember me wanting to make smores. So my solution was to bring an entire bag of marshmellows. I also had a heavy bag of popcorn kernels. The problem was that all of that weight was going into my backpack and taking up valuable room and energy. When you are in the woods you don’t eat as much as you think you will and it is better to bring healthier stuff like trail mix and fruit.
Best Wildlife Moment 2013
My (Charlene) favourite wildlife moment for 2013…
A Stroll in Vancouver’s Stanley Park
A beautiful, grand park within walking distance of downtown Vancouver – Stanley Park.
The Birds of the Pacific Northwest Raptor Show!!!
About 50 minutes from Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island is the city of Duncan. I had researched the Pacific Northwest Raptors a while back and knew that this was something that I wanted to see. I mean, who doesn’t want to see birds of prey!!!
We were lucky that we went on a weekday in early September because I imagine it gets really busy in the summer. There were many exhibits around the site, but what I was really looking forward to was the bird show. I’ve never seen one and spend so much time watching nature shows, I was very excited.
The Scenic Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular places that I’ve been to. We drove out from Vegas and it took a little over 4 hours to get there. If you are into wildlife, landscapes and natural wonders you must visit this place at least once in your lifetime.
The Mystique of Zion National Park
Zion National Park is a place that I have wanted to visit for a long time. I’ve seen so many pictures and read so many stories that I knew that this was a unique place that couldn’t be missed. I’m going to do another post on “The Zion Narrows”, so check back in a few days for that one.

Whales, Islands and Bears…oh my!
It was a beautiful morning in Ucluelet BC (Vancouver Island) and I was excited to see some wildlife. There is no place in the world quite like the west coast of Canada. We booked our Whales, Islands and Bears tour with Subtidal Adventures in their zodiac. There was a slower 4 hour boat tour but we wanted the faster moving zodiac ( 3 hours) to be able to keep pace with the wildlife.
One of the things that I forgot when I booked this tour was that I don’t handle ocean waves very well, meaning I get seasickness pretty easily. So I made sure to tell Charlene that I might lean over her side if I felt a tad queasy.
Algonquin Park July 2013
The last couple annual trips were easy, canoed one way, stayed on the campsite for two days and came back the same way.
2013 = challenge
Yes, approximately 70 km of paddling over four days. This is not a trip for the faint of heart.
Canoe Lake access point, on the dock and packing the canoe.
