A stroll along the path in Niagara-on-the-Lake allows you to appreciate the beauty of Lake Ontario. You can sit on this bench and see the historic Old Fort Niagara across the Niagara River in the United States. You can also look out towards the Lake Ontario and see the sky meet the blue water. It truly is serene. For those of our readers that happen to live in Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a top weekend trip. For those of our readers that are visiting Canada, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a must stop on your tour of Ontario.
We booked one evening at the Prince of Whales. It is part of the Vintage Hotels collection. If you want a romantic couples weekend away, treat yourself and try out one of these hotels.
Our room reminded me of so many castles we have visited in Europe. The interior design, the paintings of Royalty, and the all the luxuries of today. Our room included a king bed, fireplace, and big Jacuzzi tub. I definitely could have stayed a few more nights.
I wanted to make sure we were able to attend Afternoon Tea in The Drawing Room at the Prince of Whales. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy Afternoon Tea, I highly recommend it. Even those of you who are reluctant (as Andrew was), make the effort and go with your significant other. I had a Vanilla Blueberry tea and Andrew enjoyed a Mint tea. For the rest of the day, I heard all about how enjoyable Andrew’s tea was (coming from someone who doesn’t typically drink tea).
We spent a couple hours driving around and visiting some of the local vineyards. This is the main reason people come to visit this area. The local Ontario wines, especially the Ice Wines. We stopped in at Inniskillen. I love the rows of grape vines. The vineyards look perfect.
We stopped at Peller Estates. I signed us up for “Art of Wine & Food”. This included a sit down tasting of three wines (white, red and ice wine) and three food dishes prepared by their Chef. We were taught about the different wines and how they can really enhance (or ruin) your food. I enjoyed this experience, I have never done anything like this before. Although next time, we decided we will try an actual tour.
If you are in town, make sure to stop by Cheese Secrets. They offer some great local cheeses. It is off the main road, the street in behind the LCBO. You can enjoy some nice cheese with the wine you just purchased (as we have).
We also picked up some pastries from the bakery. Taylors is right on the main road and worth the visit.
Rum Balls, Apple Turnovers, Empire Cookie, Apple square, and Butter Tarts. I ate the Rum Balls, a Butter Tart and the Empire Cookie. Yummy!
What also intrigued us were the unique houses in the area. We love houses that have character. Once you move away from the main street, you can understand why this town is special.
I think for our next trip we will visit more of the smaller wineries, and perhaps rent a couple of bicycles.
